Pigeons vary in size and can be between 2 – 4 kg. It is difficult to remove pigeons and consequently it must be done by a qualified person. Pigeons nest on buildings and other structures usually on ledges, under eaves or on girders.
The main breeding season for pigeons is March to July. They can breed all year. Pigeons produce up to 9 broods of chicks a year. Each clutch is normally 2 eggs with an off white colour.
Feral pigeons scavenge for food in and around buildings. It is not uncommon to have many hundreds of pigeons scavenging in food rich areas. Consequently, pigeons leave a mess on buildings, vehicles, windows and structures. Pigeon droppings cause many diseases. The most common being histoplasmosis and salmonella. This is a respiratory disease that may be fatal.
To remove pigeons and all other wild birds in the UK is legislated by Natural England, The Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), courtesy of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 (Chapter 69).
